Biodegradable zip lock pouches are similar in appearance and function to regular plastic ziplock bags, but are designed to be decomposed into water, carbon dioxide (or methane), and biomass under specific environmental conditions by microorganisms (such as bacteria and fungi). 

Biodegradable zip lock bags are not made from mono material, its usually laminated from several layers:

1. Bio-based biodegradable materials

PLA (polylactic acid): One of the most common types. It is typically made from fermented starch from plants like corn and cassava. It degrades quickly under industrial composting conditions but degrades very slowly in the natural environment.

2. Petroleum-based biodegradable materials

PBAT (polybutylene adipate/terephthalate): PBAT offers excellent toughness and ductility and is often blended with PLA to compensate for its brittleness. PBS (Polybutylene Succinate): Performance is similar to PBAT.

Biodegradable zip lock pouches do make a positive effect on sustainable development in the packaging industry, but this is not enought. We need to increase comprehensive end-of-life treatment facilities and consumers' awareness of proper sorting.

1. Q: What even is a biodegradable zip lock pouch?

A: It's basically a resealable plastic bag-like the ones you use for snacks or leftovers-but made from materials that can break down naturally over time, usually in a composting facility. Instead of sticking around for hundreds of years like regular plastic, these are designed to decompose under the right conditions.

2. Q: So they're better for the planet?

A: Yeah, they can be-but with a big "if." They're a step up from traditional plastic because they don't come from fossil fuels and they can turn into compost. But only if they actually get to an industrial compost plant. If they end up in a landfill or the ocean, they might not break down much faster than regular plastic.

3. Q: Can I just toss them in my backyard compost?

A: Not so fast. Most biodegradable zip lock pouches need high heat and specific microbes to break down-stuff you usually only get in industrial composting centers. Your backyard pile probably isn't hot enough. So unless the packaging says "home compostable," it's better to check with your local waste facility or treat it like special waste.
