Introduction
Biodegradable food bags are a kind of environmentally friendly material that can be decomposed by microorganisms in the natural environment and eventually converted into harmless materials such as water and carbon dioxide. With people's attention to the environment, degradable packaging has played an important role in people's life.
Material
PLA: derived from renewable plant resources such as corn starch, the ester bonds in its molecular structure can be hydrolyzed and broken under the action of microorganisms, gradually decomposed into small molecular substances, and finally converted into carbon dioxide and water, completely returning to natural circulation. For example, starch is extracted from corn, fermented to produce lactic acid, and then synthesized to PLA by polymerization reaction. This process not only realizes the transformation from renewable resources to environmentally friendly materials, but also in the use process, its performance is similar to that of traditional plastics, with good flexibility and strength, which can meet the various needs of food packaging.
PBAT: obtained from terephthalic acid (PTA), adipic acid (AA) and 1, 4-butanediol (BDO) by chemical synthesis. It has excellent flexibility, processing performance and thermal stability. After blending with PLA and other materials, it can significantly improve the tear resistance and low temperature performance of biodegradable food bags. In the compost environment, PBAT can be corroded by microorganisms, resulting in chain breakage and molecular weight reduction, and finally biodegradation.
Cornstarch: As a natural polymer carbohydrate, it is widely available and low cost. In biodegradable food bags, it plays the role of filling and plasticizing, helping to reduce product costs and improve the rate of biodegradation of materials. Under the action of enzymes secreted by microorganisms, starch molecules can be hydrolyzed into small molecules such as glucose, which are further used by microbial metabolism to accelerate the decomposition process of materials.

Advantages
From the production of raw materials to the final use and degradation of the product, the carbon emission of the whole life cycle is significantly lower than that of traditional plastic food bags. Taking PLA as an example, in its production process, carbon dioxide fixed by plant photosynthesis is used, and an equal amount of carbon dioxide is released back to the atmosphere when it is degraded, thus achieving a relative balance of the carbon cycle. In contrast, traditional plastics use oil as raw material, and the production process consumes large amounts of fossil energy and emits large amounts of greenhouse gases, which has a negative impact on global climate change.
