Brown kraft paper bags are the most common packaging bags and are widely used for snacks, pet food, nuts, etc. Kraft paper is an environmentally friendly material with a simple, original and high-end feel.

In one project I worked on for a dry snack brand, we ended up choosing a flat bottom kraft paper bag mainly because of how it performs on shelves. Once filled, it stands quite steadily, which made a difference during in-store display. Compared to standard pouches, the box-style bottom also gave us a bit more usable space without changing the overall footprint too much.

The structure we tested was a combination of MOPP, kraft paper, and inner plastic layers. The matte outer surface helped tone down reflections under store lighting, which the client preferred for a more understated look. At the same time, the inner layers were doing most of the functional work-helping resist oil and moisture, especially since the product had a slightly greasy surface.

We also looked at a few other formats during the sampling stage, like stand-up pouches and side gusset bags. In the end, the decision came down to how the product would be displayed and handled rather than just cost or material.

Small details like the tear notch and zipper didn't seem critical at first, but after testing, they turned out to matter. Being able to open the bag cleanly and reseal it made it easier for repeated use, which was important for that particular product.

On the printing side, the choice usually depends on how stable the design is. For smaller runs or when designs are still being adjusted, digital printing tends to be more practical. I've used it in projects where the artwork changed multiple times-it avoids the need to remake printing plates each time.

For larger, more consistent orders, gravure printing is still the more common option. There's an upfront cost for cylinders, but once that's done, repeat production becomes more efficient. I've seen clients switch to this method after their volumes stabilized.

Color consistency is something that comes up often as well. With both methods, getting the right balance between design detail and production efficiency usually takes a bit of back-and-forth during the early stages.
