PCR Packaging Methods: Technological Innovation and Standardization Practices in the Foreign Trade Industry

Amidst the growing global demand for PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing technology, the scientific and regulatory compliance of its packaging methods has become a key focus for the foreign trade industry. The sensitivity of PCR reagents to temperature, humidity, and contamination requires packaging solutions that balance functionality, safety, and international standards to ensure product stability during cross-border transportation.

 

Material Selection and Structural Design

PCR packaging typically utilizes a multi-layer composite material. An inner layer of polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) provides chemical inertness and sealing; a middle layer of aluminum foil or EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer) provides a moisture and oxygen barrier; and an outer layer of PET or corrugated cardboard enhances pressure resistance. For reagents requiring cold chain transportation, vacuum insulation panels (VIP) and phase change materials (PCM) are widely used to maintain a constant temperature of 2-8°C. Regarding the packaging structure, individually packaged reagent tubes with shock-absorbing foam trays effectively prevent collisions and leaks during transportation.

Sterilization and Anti-Contamination Measures

PCR packaging for export must be sterilized using gamma irradiation or ethylene oxide and filled in a cleanroom (ISO Class 7 or higher). The seal between the tube cap and the box must be tested to stringent standards, such as using a negative pressure method to detect leaks (typically requiring <0.1%). The labeling system must include biohazard identification, storage conditions, and a QR code for traceability, complying with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations and customs requirements of the destination country.

Standardization and Certification

Major markets such as the EU (IVDR), the US (FDA 21 CFR Part 11), and China (NMPA) have mandatory regulations for labeling and biocompatibility of PCR packaging. Foreign trade companies should prioritize obtaining CE, FDA, or ISO 13485 certification and clearly mark the registration number on the packaging. In recent years, the promotion of biodegradable PCR packaging materials (such as PLA) has also responded to the trend of international environmental regulations.

Precise PCR packaging not only overcomes technical barriers but also holds the key to improving the competitiveness of foreign trade companies' supply chains. Through material innovation and process standardization, companies can effectively reduce cargo damage rates and win the long-term trust of global medical institutions and laboratories.
