Exploring the Degradation Path of Flexible Food Packaging

The Ideal of Eco-Friendly Packaging vs. Production Line Reality

In the current food consumer market, brands' demand for green packaging is rising sharply. However, translating eco-friendly concepts into actual packaging bags is far more complex than just slapping a green label on a design blueprint. When many brands first encounter biodegradable materials, they often hold highly idealized expectations. But when these materials actually enter the lamination, extrusion, or pouch-making processes, the limitations of their physical properties quickly become apparent.

The core mission of flexible food packaging has always been to protect its contents. If the pursuit of environmental protection leads to a shortened shelf life or a significant drop in barrier performance, it will ironically cause greater food waste. Therefore, during Lepu's daily production and R&D testing, when faced with various biodegradable demands, we prefer to start from the inherent characteristics of the materials. We match the most suitable solution to the customer's specific product, rather than blindly pushing a single, absolute eco-friendly concept.

Mainstream Biodegradable Materials

On actual factory production lines, PLA, PBAT, and kraft paper are currently the most inquired-about options and the ones where we invest the most effort in refining our processes. Each comes with very distinct pros and cons:

PLA

Derived from biomass like corn starch, this material boasts excellent gloss and transparency. If your packaging needs to visually showcase the tempting food inside, PLA is a great choice. However, experience shows that pure PLA is relatively brittle and has limited temperature resistance. In multi-layer composite structures, we must precisely control the heat-sealing temperature; otherwise, wrinkling or cracking at the seal can easily occur.

PBAT

Compared to brittle PLA, PBAT is highly flexible, offering excellent film-forming properties and extensibility. In practical applications, we rarely use it alone. Instead, we blend and modify PLA with PBAT, ensuring the packaging is stiff enough while possessing good tensile properties to accommodate the filling of foods in various forms.

Kraft Paper

The inherent rustic visual effect of kraft paper naturally aligns with the positioning of organic, healthy foods. But paper itself lacks moisture and oxygen barrier capabilities. To meet food-grade protection standards, we typically laminate a layer of biodegradable, bio-based film on the inside of the kraft paper. This not only preserves the tactile feel of the paper but also equips the packaging with essential barrier functions.

From Concept to the Shelf: Considerations for Scalable Implementation

Evaluating whether an eco-friendly packaging solution is truly mature ultimately comes down to one standard: can it be smoothly mass-produced? Many materials that perform perfectly in the laboratory will expose issues like unstable tension control and poor ink adhesion once placed on high-speed printing and pouch-making equipment.

At Lepu, we have accumulated a vast amount of data and debugging experience in advancing the commercialization of biodegradable packaging. We not only provide standardized eco-friendly pouch types but also support in-depth customization services. From fine-tuning material ratios to structural designs tailored to specific heat-sealing conditions, our technical team can maximize the mechanical properties and barrier capabilities of flexible packaging while ensuring its biodegradable nature.

Do You Have Any Question?

Can your packaging bags be customized?

Of course. As a professional source manufacturer, we offer comprehensive customization services-including bag type, size, material, thickness, and printing patterns-all tailored to your specific requirements for personalized production.

Could you provide packaging bag design services?

If you don't have any design drafts, our factory has a professional design team that can provide layout and basic design services based on your requirements.

Can special accessories be added to the packaging bag?

We can add the following components based on functional requirements: zipper, suction nozzle, exhaust valve, aircraft-style opening, easy-tear tab, and handle.

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

The minimum order quantity for traditional gravure printing is typically 10,000 units, primarily determined by bag dimensions. For initial trial runs or small-batch orders with multiple SKUs, we also offer digital printing services with a minimum order quantity as low as 500 units.
