Custom Pet Food Packaging Case Study: From Design To Production

Making Custom Design Truly Serve the Product

In the pet food industry, the significance of packaging has long surpassed being a mere container. It must not only catch the consumer's eye on the shelf at the first moment but also bear the heavy responsibility of providing an oxygen barrier, preserving freshness, and preventing high-grease penetration. Often, brand owners come to us with highly creative conceptual blueprints, hoping to create a unique visual experience. But this is only the first step.

We once hosted a premium pet food brand that wanted to adopt an eight-side seal flat-bottom pouch for a more three-dimensional display effect, pursuing a specific tactile feel and display window design in the material. During the customization phase, the real challenge lay not in drawing the graphics, but in material science matching. We needed to select a composite film structure for the client that could perfectly carry exquisite printing while possessing high barrier properties.

Another highly representative case came from a pet food client focusing on fresh meat and highly active probiotics. Because the product was rich in fats and highly prone to releasing trace gases during storage and transit, the client raised a tricky requirement: the packaging had to achieve absolute oxygen and moisture barriers to prevent grease oxidation, completely eliminate the risk of bag swelling or even bursting during long-distance transportation, and most importantly, ensure any functional additions would not ruin the large-area, exquisite brand illustration on the front.

To solve this implementation dilemma, Lepupouch's technical team abandoned conventional micro-perforation solutions that would compromise freshness. Instead, we precisely embedded a specially made one-way degassing valve in a hidden area on the back of the packaging. This solution sounds straightforward, but its actual execution was full of tests-the biggest difficulty lay in perfectly fusing the degassing valve with the multi-layer co-extruded composite film while ensuring the high temperature of heat sealing would not destroy the barrier layer of the surrounding film. After multiple rounds of testing, continuously fine-tuning the sealing parameters of the degassing valve and the composite ratio of the films, our engineering team ultimately not only allowed excess gas inside the bag to escape smoothly and kept external oxygen out, but also perfectly preserved the visual design the client was so proud of.

Transforming Blueprints into Productivity

There is a rule of thumb in the flexible packaging industry: a design that looks flawless on a screen will often be riddled with issues on the production line if one does not understand the characteristics of the machinery. There exists an invisible chasm between a design draft and actual production implementation.

Taking the implementation of eight-side seal flat-bottom pouches as an example, many novice teams encounter issues with weak sealing or skewed forming during trial production. In reality, this is often directly related to the types of bottom shapes of the pouch and the heat-sealing process. Lepupouch's engineering team demonstrates irreplaceable value at this stage. During the transition from design to physical product, we repeatedly fine-tune the coordination of the bottom-forming sealing molds, the heat-sealing temperature curves, and the tension control before loading the machine. We deeply understand that an excellent packaging design must not only possess commercial appeal but also extremely high manufacturability, ensuring it can still be formed precisely on high-speed rotating equipment.

Stability in Mass Production

When a sample finally passes various rigorous physical performance tests, the real battle has just begun-that is, mass production without any deviation. For pet food brands, the delivery of tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of packaging bags leaves no room for color shifts or degradation of sealing performance between batches.

Scaled manufacturing tests the foundation of a factory. At Lepupouch, we have established a strict closed loop from raw material quality control to finished product warehousing. Relying on advanced extrusion, lamination, and pouch-making equipment, as well as years of accumulated technical expertise in the industry, we can replicate perfect laboratory data one-to-one onto large-scale mass production assembly lines. Whether your need is a small-batch trial run for market testing or a fully rolled-out million-unit order, Lepupouch can become your most reliable supply chain partner with stable production capacity, outstanding yield rates, and a profound background in material R&D.

Sustainable Pet Food Packaging

Lepupouch's Commitment

From an initial conceptual sketch to the perfect finished product finally displayed on retail shelves, the birth of pet food packaging is a relay race spanning aesthetics, materials science, and manufacturing processes. In this relay, a disconnect at any link can lead to all previous efforts being wasted. Successful customization never merely stops at being visually stunning; it is deeply rooted in precise control over material characteristics and a profound understanding of equipment operation. No matter how complex the structural demands are, or the special formulas with strict standards for freshness and moisture protection, seamlessly transforming creative concepts into reality that can be efficiently mass-produced is exactly the core value Lepu continuously pursues in the plastic flexible packaging sector. We are committed to using our solid R&D foundation and strong production capabilities to translate every detail on the production line into the market competitiveness of our clients' brands.
